Is the saga of Canada's next fighter almost over?

First of all, thanks to all that brought this to my attention...  Of course the news broke just as I was watching X-Men:  Day of Future Past (great movie, BTW), followed by a short night's sleep, followed by my "day job"...  So I haven't been able to comment about it until now.

As most of you know, there are sources stating that the Canadian government will make an announcement regarding the CF-18 replacement next week, possibly as early as Tuesday The sole-source acquisition of the F-35A is rumored to be the most likely outcome.  The government has already started to take flak based on these unofficial reports, but has so far stated that a decision has yet to be made.

I do not wish to comment any further on this until the official details are known.  There would be little point.

  1. The F-35 is the best decision by far. Moreover, it was always going to be the choice - this "reset" was a farce simply to appease the uneducated.

  5. Oh, another thing, educated people end sentences with a period, it's a little small black dot on your key board, not a coma.......

The Gov't should simply commit to 24-36 ASH F-18's as an interim measure, so that modern Gen 4.5+ aircraft are in the RCAF inventory starting 2017/18. If there is a true blue on red shooting match in the next 5 years, the air force can not afford to be in a position with geriatric CF-18's.
In the mean time, the Gov't simply maintains it's part of the F35 program for political or image purposes, until there is a turning point (i.e. program actually makes it or just tanks).

  8. That would definitely reduce financial risk and keep the US appeased with a home purchase. Mind you, according to a wiki leaks cable the US was allegedly still satisfied that Brazil purchased the Gripen as an alternative to the F18s since over 50% of the parts of the Gripen are actually made in America and they would still benefit from that acquisition despite being snubbed on the F18 deal. ((I'm just throwing that out there since this is the Gripen site after all.))
